Second Grade Classes

Second grade is a busy year for students in the library. They will learn:
  • about the Dewey Decimal System, which will help them learn how to locate nonfiction books.
  • begin reading chapter books
  • how to select a book that is at their reading level by using the 5 Finger Test.
  • how to read for longer periods of time
  • discover favorite authors

The Five Finger Test
  1. Select a page in the middle of the book.
  2. Read the page. As your are reading the page, hold up a finger for each word you don't know.
  3. 1 finger - easy to read, have fun. 2 fingers - great choice! 3 fingers- challenging, but read it with a little help. 4 fingers - too hard to read independently, maybe next year. 5 fingers - have someone read it to you. 0 fingers?? - too easy!
